What to Wear on a Desert Safari in Abu Dhabi

There is no strict dress code on most Abu Dhabi Desert Safari tours, but showing up in the wrong outfit can turn a fun afternoon into an uncomfortable one. Here is what actually works, based on what our guests wear every day.

The Short Answer

Light, breathable, comfortable clothes you do not mind getting a little sandy โ€” plus closed shoes for dune bashing and sandboarding, and a light layer for the evening.

Tops & Bottoms

  • Loose cotton t-shirts or breathable fabrics โ€” avoid anything too tight or restrictive for dune bashing
  • Trousers or long shorts rather than very short shorts, since sand kicks up during activities
  • Modest coverage is appreciated at the desert camp out of respect for local culture, though nothing is enforced

Footwear

Closed, comfortable shoes (trainers or hiking-style shoes) are best for getting in and out of the 4x4 and for sandboarding. Flip-flops are fine once you are settled at camp, but many guests find sand gets uncomfortably hot on bare feet during the day.

Evening & Overnight Safaris

Bring a light jacket or shawl if you are booking an Evening Desert Safari or our Overnight Desert Safari โ€” desert temperatures drop noticeably after sunset, even in summer.

Other Things Worth Packing

  • Sunglasses and a cap or scarf for sun and windblown sand
  • A phone or camera for sunset and sunrise photos
  • A small bag you can keep between your feet during dune bashing, since loose items shift around

Abu Dhabi Desert Safari Tours: Dressing by Season

  • October to April โ€” daytime temperatures sit around 22 to 30ยฐC, so light clothes work well; add a jacket for the evening
  • May to September โ€” midday heat can pass 45ยฐC, so pick the loosest breathable clothes you own and consider a Morning Desert Safari instead of a midday slot

What Not to Wear

  • Heels or loose sandals for dune bashing, sandboarding or quad biking
  • White or delicate fabrics โ€” between the sand and the BBQ dinner, they rarely survive the evening
  • Expensive or loose jewellery that can slip off during activities

Dressing for Quad Biking and Dune Buggies

If you have booked an ATV or buggy add-on, closed shoes and sunglasses are essential, and a scarf helps with windblown sand. Our quad biking guide and buggy vs quad comparison cover the rest. For evening timing, see our best time guide.
