Best Time for a Desert Safari in Abu Dhabi
One of the most common questions we get before guests book an Abu Dhabi desert safari is simple: when should I go? The honest answer depends on the season you're visiting and what kind of experience you want.
Evening Safaris: The Most Popular Choice
Most visitors choose an evening desert safari because it packs the most into one trip โ dune bashing in daylight, a golden sunset over the dunes, and a full BBQ dinner with live entertainment afterwards. If you only have time for one desert trip during your stay, this is usually the safest bet. See our Evening Desert Safari package for full pricing and inclusions.
Morning Safaris: Better for Summer Months
Between May and September, Abu Dhabi's desert temperatures climb fast after 9 AM. A Morning Desert Safari gets you dune bashing while the sand is still cool, and you'll usually share the dunes with fewer other tour groups.
Winter vs Summer
Winter months (November to March) offer the most comfortable temperatures for any time of day, which is why they're peak season. If you're visiting in summer, we generally recommend a morning or evening safari over midday activities, and always bring water and light clothing.
What To Pack
- Comfortable closed shoes for dune bashing and sandboarding
- A light jacket for evening/overnight trips โ desert nights get cooler than you'd expect
- Sunglasses and a scarf or cap for sun and sand protection
- A fully charged phone or camera for sunset photos
Abu Dhabi Desert Safari Weather by Season
- October to April โ the best season, with daytime temperatures around 22 to 30ยฐC and cool, pleasant evenings
- May to September โ summer heat can pass 45ยฐC at midday, so book a morning or evening slot instead
The desert we use, near Al Khatim, is about 45 minutes from the city, so even a half-day trip gives you plenty of time on the dunes.
