A Bedouin Tradition, Kept Alive

For centuries, camels were the only way to cross the Abu Dhabi desert — Bedouins called them the ships of the desert. Riding one today is slow, gentle and calm, a complete contrast to the dune bashing in our 4x4 Land Cruisers. You can read more about the history in our guide to camel riding traditions in Abu Dhabi.

How the Camel Riding Abu Dhabi Experience Works

Your handler brings the camel to a stop and it kneels down so you can climb into the saddle easily. Hold the handle, lean back as the camel stands, and then just relax — the handler leads the camel on a short loop while you enjoy the view from two metres up. Children can ride together with an adult on the same camel.

The Best Photo Moment of the Day

We time the camel ride for golden hour, when the light over the Al Khatim dunes turns warm and soft. Your handler is happy to take photos of you on the camel with the dunes behind you. It pairs perfectly with sandboarding, which is also included free in every safari.

How long does the camel ride last?

The included camel ride is a short, guided loop of a few minutes — enough for great photos and a taste of traditional Bedouin transport.

No experience is needed at all. The camel kneels so you can climb on easily, and a handler leads the camel the whole way at a gentle walking pace.

What should I wear for a camel ride?

Long trousers or leggings are most comfortable against the saddle. Wear sandals or closed shoes, and bring a hat and sunscreen for the afternoon sun.
